About the sculpture

This high quality limewood figure probably once formed part of an altarpiece, and along with other putti, would have supported either the main scene or a subsidiary symbol. The style has been linked to that of Ignaz Günther (1725-75), one of the leading Rococo sculptors of Munich, who is best-known for a series of altarpieces in Bavarian churches. This weightless, charming figure is typical of the South German Rococo.
