Иван Шишкин, «верстовой столб русского пейзажа», предпочитавший в своих полотнах изображать обширные панорамы русских лесов и дремучих чащ с деревьями-великанами, в этой работе обращается в картине-прогулке к не совсем типичному для своего творчества сюжету. Вернувшись в Россию после четырехлетней работы в Германии и Швейцарии, мастер сохраняет память об увиденных им подобных мотивах в мастерских и на выставках в Дюссельдорфе и Мюнхене. В 1860-е годы французские импрессионисты также обращались к подобным изображениям прогуливающихся по Булонскому лесу или отдыхающих на пикниках дам и кавалеров, или художников на этюдах.

В картине Шишкина, безусловно, наряду с обаятельно переданной сценой прогулки выразился и собственный взгляд молодого русского пейзажиста на природу – присущее ему пристальное внимание к каждой детали растительного мира. Травы, мхи, кора старой березы – все написано с тщательной проработкой форм живой природы, что всегда будет отличать работы Шишкина. Но, несмотря на эту предельную верность натуре, почти фотографическую, полотна мастера всегда «дышат» воздухом, согреты солнечным теплом. В свои картины художник нечасто помещает изображения людей – «Прогулка в лесу» – одна из них. В группе гуляющих можно угадать и самого автора полотна, ведущего под руку молодую жену Евгению Александровну (урожд. Васильеву – сестру художника Федора Васильева), с которой он обвенчался в 1868 году. Живости сцене добавляет и идущее семейство с маленькой девочкой, что-то эмоционально рассказывающей родителям. Оживляет всю сцену и резвящаяся впереди собака. Все настроение картины подчинено безмятежной радости человеческой жизни.

    World's Fair in Paris

    At the 1867 Exposition Universelle he showed several drawings and the painting "View in the Environs of Düsseldorf."

  2. 1868

    A Professorship Replaced by an Order

    The Academy of Arts awarded Shishkin the title of professor for the paintings "Pine Forest" and "Rather than Cross the Bridge, Let Us Look for a Ford," but the Academy's president, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, instead decorated the artist with the Order of St. Stanislaus, 3rd class.

    Marriage to Evgenia Vasilyeva

    He married Evgenia Alexandrovna Vasilyeva, sister of the landscape painter Fyodor Vasilyev; the marriage produced sons Vladimir and Konstantin, who died in infancy, and a daughter, Lidia.

    "Pine Forest" at the 1st Peredvizhniki Exhibition

    The painting "Pine Forest. Mast-Timber Forest in Vyatka Province" was shown at the 1st Peredvizhniki exhibition in St. Petersburg, drew uniformly favorable reviews, and attracted the attention of Pavel Tretyakov; in March 1872 it won first prize in the competition of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts.

    Founding Member of the Society of Russian Aquafortists

    He became a founding member of the Society of Russian Aquafortists; he practiced etching until the end of his life, devoting almost as much time to it as to painting.
