The fashionable portraitist of St Petersburg
In St Petersburg Bryullov’s fame as a virtuoso fashionable portraitist grew: many counted it an honour to be painted by him. Among the best are the portraits of N. V. Kukolnik (1836), V. A. Zhukovsky (1837–38), I. A. Krylov (1839), A. N. Strugovshchikov (1840) and his brother A. P. Bryullov (1841); he was a friend of Kukolnik and of the composer M. I. Glinka.
1843–1847
Work for the Kazan Cathedral
In 1843–47 Bryullov took part in the painting work for the Kazan Cathedral in St Petersburg.
1848–1849
The work on St Isaac’s undermines his health
By 1848 the sketches were finished and Bryullov began to paint, but heavy work in the damp, unfinished cathedral undermined his already weak health, bringing heart complications and a worse rheumatism, and he asked to be released from the work. He had already painted nearly all the main figures of the ceiling; P. V. Basin finished the rest.

Leaves for treatment on Madeira
On 27 April 1849, on his doctors’ insistence, Bryullov left Russia and travelled through Poland, Prussia, Belgium, England and Portugal to the island of Madeira for treatment.

Returns to Italy for good
In 1850 Bryullov returned to Italy for good, met A. Tittoni, a comrade-in-arms of Garibaldi, and lived out his last years practically in his house; most of the master’s late portraits and watercolours are still held in this family’s private collection.
