  1. 1907–1909

Journeys to Italy, Austria and Germany

In 1907 Kustodiev travelled to Italy, and in 1909 to Austria and Germany and again to France and Italy; in these years he painted many portraits and genre pieces.

  2. 1909

First signs of his spinal illness

Kustodiev showed the first signs of a spinal cord tumour (other accounts call it tuberculosis of the spine), which in time confined him to a wheelchair.

  3. 1909

    Elected Academician of painting

On the nomination of Repin and other professors, Kustodiev was elected an Academician of painting of the Imperial Academy of Arts.

  4. 1910

Kustodiev first met the artists of the World of Art at the time of the 1905 Revolution; in 1910 he joined their association and subsequently took part in all their exhibitions.

  5. 1911

    Treatment at a Swiss clinic

Severe symptoms forced Kustodiev to spend several months (other accounts say a year) in a private clinic at a Swiss mountain resort. Several operations brought only temporary relief.

  6. 1911

First stage work: “An Ardent Heart”

Kustodiev first worked in the theatre, designing the sets for Alexander Ostrovsky's An Ardent Heart; such was his success that further orders came pouring in.
