About the painting

Portretul bărbatului se profilează pe un fond neutru, în brun, ce-i ecranează figur, evidențiindu-l ca personaj și conferind spațialitate ansamblului compozițional. Vestimentația e redată în tonuri închise fără decorații și accesorii, cu excepția gulerului de blană ce formează un rever amplu care-i încadrează silueta până la nivelul umerilor. Cămașa albă ce se ivește pe piept și la guler, are un rol bine definit din punct de vedere cromatic și compozițional, ca și pălăria ce acoperă capul, și de aseamenea, lunga barbă căruntă. Deși redată cu amănuntime cvasi-miniaturistică (fiecare fir din barbă, cutele gulerului...), această recuzită vestimentară, doar sugerează poziția socială a celui portretizat, fiind clar subordonată fizionomicului și impunând atenției.
