The owner is known. Whether it is on view today, the museum does not say, and we were not trained to guess.
Portrait medallions are an art for which developed during the reign of Henry VIII. These small, portable portraits were often invested with great symbolism or significance, both politically and personally – painted to be held and viewed closely, and to be presented as tokens of loyalty, friendship or love. This portrait miniature depicts Elizabeth "Bessy" Allen (1764-1846) who married Josiah Wedgwood II in December 1792.
