In 1838, a year after the Prix de Rome, Couture is shown at the Paris Salon for the first time, with a canvas depicting a Venetian woman after a night orgy.

Historical and genre pictures at the Salon
In 1840 Couture begins exhibiting historical and genre pictures at the Paris Salon, earning several medals for his works.

The nickname “French Veronese”
In the early 1840s Couture enjoys great popularity thanks to his elegant manner of painting, his refined sense of colour and his flights of creative fancy. He is called the “French Veronese”, and some contemporaries even place him above the Venetian painter.
