Летом 1889 года Шишкин ездил в Петрозаводск, а затем работал на побережье Финского залива в поселке Мери-Хови, где предпочитал писать привычные для себя лесные ландшафты. Прибрежный мотив в этюдном наследии мастера встречается довольно редко. Избрав его, Шишкин демонстрирует блестящее владение композиционными приемами, характерными для показа приморских пейзажей, где дугообразная линия берега плавно уводит взгляд в далекое морское пространство. Художник представляет вид с обрыва, и высокая точка обзора позволяет показать, как ширится пейзаж за пределами видимого на картине фрагмента. На первый взгляд, необычно для Шишкина и живописное решение этого картинного этюда. Текучая волнистая линия белого песчаного берега и вторящий ей причудливый контур теней от густой зелени подчеркивают декоративные цветовые контрасты.

Особое внимание художника к колориту отмечали критики, писавшие о выставках работ Шишкина в начале 1890-х годов. Пейзажист демонстрировал на них преимущественно этюдные работы и, по одному из отзывов, выражал в них «всю прелестную фантасмагорию красок и цветов». Но и в подобных случаях Шишкин остается корифеем реалистического пейзажа. В этюде «По берегу моря» достоверно передана атмосфера солнечного дня, ширь лесного и морского простора, на фоне которого радуют взор детали – чуть намеченные кистью нежные головки цветов, травинки вокруг теплых от солнца камней, тонкие ветки кустарников.

    He took part in the world's fairs in Vienna (1873) and Paris (1878).

    The Album "25 Engravings on Copper"

    He published a second album, "25 Engravings on Copper by I. I. Shishkin," prepared for print with the help of his friend, the landscape painter I. V. Volkovsky.

  3. May – October 1879

    His Only Trip to the Crimea

    Accompanied by the landscape painter Efim Volkov and his pupil Andrei Shilder, he toured the entire southern coast of the Crimea (Gurzuf, Alupka, Alushta, with an ascent of Ai-Petri); he brought back studies, drawings, and pastels, on the basis of which he painted pictures for the 8th Peredvizhniki exhibition of 1880.

  4. 1881

    Death of His Second Wife, Olga Lagoda

    He lost his second wife, the painter Olga Lagoda-Shishkina; he went through an emotionally difficult period and for some time could not work, until the urge to create brought him back to life.

  5. 1884–1885

    "Forest Distances" at the 12th Peredvizhniki Exhibition

    The panoramic painting "Forest Distances" was first shown at the 12th exhibition of the Peredvizhniki; critics called it all but unrivaled at the exhibition.

  6. 1891

    Monographic Exhibition

    A monographic exhibition of Shishkin's work was held, at which the painting "A River Backwater in the Forest" may have been shown under the title "Meri-Hovi, the Estate of Mr. Riedinger."
