In the life of Eugène Boudin

The whole life
  1. 1850

A scholarship and Eugène Isabey's studio

In 1850 Boudin won a scholarship that allowed him to settle in Paris and enrol as a student in Eugène Isabey's studio; to supplement his income he often went back to Normandy to paint.

  2. 1850

Two paintings at an exhibition in Le Havre

Boudin sent two of his paintings to the 1850 exhibition in Le Havre.

  3. from 1855

    Regular trips to Brittany

From 1855 Boudin made regular trips to Brittany, the region his future wife came from.

  4. 1857/1858

Friendship with the young Claude Monet

Boudin befriended the 17-year-old Claude Monet and persuaded him to give up his teenage caricatures and become a landscape painter, instilling in him a love of bright colour and of light playing on water. They remained lifelong friends, and Monet later paid tribute to his early influence.
