About the work

Paul Travis was Frank Wilcox’s student at the Cleveland School of Art from 1913 to 1917, and joined the faculty in 1927. In these pencil sketches, the two have drawn each other, suggesting an amicable relationship. Whether for practice or amusement, the portraits appear full of personality. Both artists would later become recognized as major figures of the Cleveland School scene.
