About the painting

This is one of a group of seven portraits of Indian men and women from a scrapbook. It belonged to William Fullerton of Rosemount, and some of the people depicted may have been members of his household. The woman in this picture sits on a Dutch-style chair, smoking a huqqa resting on a candlestand with tripod legs derived from English patterns.
