About the painting
This panel, part of a larger screen used as a backdrop at important social events, was painted by Buddhist monk the Venerable Yi Man-bong. He was one of the first three painters in Korea to be designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property for his tanch'ong paintings. Tanch'ong is the traditional craft of decorating important wooden buildings, such as temples, in the five primary colours of red, blue, yellow, back and white. Green is also often added in this colour scheme.
