About the painting
The sketch here is of one of the final episodes in the Tale of Kachi-kachi Yama. It is the moment when the rabbit strikes his tinder-box, setting fire to the bundle of twigs on the back of the tanuki, a creature that is able to change its shape. The animals are depicted wearing peasant costume, and adopting human attitudes and attributes. The revenge enacted on the tanuki is wrought not by the old man of the tale, but by his pet rabbit. This is part of a series of paintings from this story drawn by the eccentric Meiji period artist Kawanabe Kyosai.
