About the painting

This painting depicts a Mughal artist decorating the walls of a pavilion. It was probably done between about 1600 and 1610, and has floral borders added in the 18th century when it was bound in an album with paintings and drawings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The album is associated with Robert Clive and is known conventionally as the "Small Clive Album".
