About the painting
Painted illustration in tones of grey, white and black created for publication in a newspaper/illustrated magazine, probably The Illustrated London News. It shows the opera singer and actress Adelina Patti (1843-1919) performing at the Albert Hall in 1901. The singer is positioned on a stage in the central background of the illustration, the tiered seats surrounding the stage are filled with spectators. The illustration was drawn by the artist Allan Stewart (1865–1951). It has been signed and dated by the artist in the bottom left hand corner.
This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
