Значение творчества Исаака Левитана для русской пейзажной живописи неоценимо. Фактически мастеру удалось возвести пейзажный жанр во многих своих произведениях до уровня философского прочтения. Мастер «пейзажа-настроения» зачастую выступает настоящим мыслителем, наделяя мир природы «божественным нечто, разлитым повсюду», беспрестанно намекая человеку о том даре жизни среди красоты, всепоглощающей стихии, что всегда оказывается сильнее и беспощаднее.

Последнее монументальное полотно, созданное Исааком Левитаном «Озеро» (Государственный Русский музей), вобрало в себя размышления и чувства художника, став своеобразным итогом творчества. Неслучайно, создав на основе пейзажа эпический образ России, живописец хотел назвать произведение «Русь».

Замысел полотна возник еще в 1898 году, а в картине «Осень. Река» (1899, частное собрание) нашел свое композиционное решение. Сложность поставленной задачи обуславливает длительную работу над произведением. Исполнение многочисленных натурных этюдов озера с различными вариациями освещения свидетельствуют о трудоемком подготовительном процессе создания полотна. Левитан избирает состояние природы полное звучности красок начала осени. Цветовое богатство зелени и отражений в водах озера, яркое синее небо с плывущим караваном пышных облаков очаровывает и создает впечатление панорамности вида, сообщая зрителю ощущение необъятности русской природы. Прекрасный и возвышенный в своей простоте, образ страны в восприятии художника получает торжественное звучание.

Хранящийся в собрании Третьяковской галереи небольшой этюд намечает общую композицию и тональные отношения будущего полотна. В нем больше ярких, оранжевых и голубых красок, чем в законченном варианте, оттого он производит впечатление менее концентрированное по смыслу и форме.

    Typhus again, and a heart aneurysm

    After a second bout of typhus the symptoms of an aneurysm of the heart worsen; the illness becomes grave and incurable.

    An exhibition in Odessa with Simov and Popov

    A joint exhibition of paintings and watercolours by Isaac Levitan, Viktor Simov and Alexander Popov is held in Odessa.

    A few weeks in Finland

    He travels to Finland for a few weeks and paints “Fortress. Finland” (Olavinlinna castle in Savonlinna), “Rocks”, “Sea” and “Punkaharju”; in 1897 he finishes “Remnants of the Past. Twilight. Finland”.

  4. 1898

    The title of academician and teaching at his old school

    He is awarded the title of academician of landscape painting and begins teaching at the very school where he studied; he dreams of creating a “House of Landscapes” — a large studio where all Russian landscape painters could work.

    Paintings at the World Exhibition in Paris

    All summer, from June 1900, Levitan's paintings are shown in the Russian section of the World Exhibition in Paris.
