Commissioned to portray the Prince of Wales
Growing fame brings Bastien-Lepage prominent commissions: in 1879 he is asked to paint the Prince of Wales. A small portrait of the prince is shown at the Royal Academy in 1880.

Bastien-Lepage’s fame is such that by 1883 a critic remarks that so many artists now paint in his manner that he seems to paint like everyone. His en plein air scenes of peasant life strongly influence many artists abroad, among them George Clausen in England and Tom Roberts in Australia.
