Het onthoofde lichaam van Johannes de Doper ligt op een podium op de binnenplaats van het paleis van Herodes. Een soldaat raapt het hoofd van Johannes op en het bloed spuit uit het lichaam. De beul steekt zijn zwaard terug in de schede, hij wordt omringd door soldaten met speren en hellebaarden. Rechts nadert Salome met de schotel waarop ze het hoofd zal leggen, naast haar loopt waarschijnlijk Herodes. Boven op een balkon staan toeschouwers, zij worden geflankeerd door twee schilden met het keurvorstelijk en hertogelijk wapen van Saksen.
