De beul legt het hoofd van Johannes de Doper op de schaal, die Salomé en haar moeder Herodias vasthouden. Links kijken drie vrouwen toe. Rechts staan soldaten, waarvan er een gekleed is in een leeuwenvel en een fasces in de hand houdt. Op de achtergrond in een nis een standbeeld van Mozes met de tafelen van de wet.
