He meets Emma Lamm
In early 1881 he meets Emma Lamm, from a wealthy Jewish merchant family, who was interested in art and culture and whose background was quite different from his. After a long engagement they will marry in October 1885.
1882
He begins to master etching
From 1882 he masters the technique of etching and goes on to create more than three hundred works. He works with one free stroke, using neither contour lines nor cross-hatching, and his etchings are a great success with artists and the public, prompting many imitations.
