David Garrick (1717-1775) was the outstanding actor of the 18th century British stage.
This is one of several existing copies of Joshua Reynolds's 1776 portrait of Garrick and is believed to have been painted by a pupil of Reynolds named Stewart. It first belonged to a friend of Garrick's, Richard Owen Cambridge (1717-1802), and on his death passed to his son, G.O. Cambridge, Archdeacon of Middlesex, and then to a C.P. Garrick, who may have been the actor's great nephew, Christopher.
