About the sculpture

This relief depicts a nymph playing a set of double pipes to an infant satyr who is shown dancing and playing the castanettes. Behind the nymph there is a child who leans on her shoulder. It is a lead cast of a relief probably by Claude Michel Clodion, a French sculptor working in the eighteenth century who specialised in small scale works which depicted nymphs, satyrs, bacchantes and other classical figures.
