While awaiting an exit visa, he wrote his autobiography, My Life.

Emigration from Soviet Russia
In 1922 he left with his family for Lithuania, where an exhibition of his work was held in Kaunas, and from there went on to Germany.

Beginning of the Collaboration with Ambroise Vollard
Back in Paris, he established a business relationship with the art dealer Ambroise Vollard and began creating etchings for illustrated books — Gogol's Dead Souls, the Bible, and the fables of La Fontaine.

First Exhibition in the United States
In 1926 Chagall's first American exhibition, of about 100 works, was held at the Reinhardt Galleries in New York; the artist himself did not attend the opening.
