Meanwhile, in the life of Ilya Repin

The whole life
  1. 1872

    Tretyakov comes to Repin’s studio

Hearing of the material brought back from the Volga, Pavel Tretyakov came to the St Petersburg studio himself, studied the sketches on the walls for a long time and chose two — the portraits of a watchman and a pedlar — halving the price. Later, in Moscow, the business relationship grew into friendship: they exchanged notes, argued and suggested ideas to one another.

  2. 1872

Commission from Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich

Repin’s drawings of the Volga barge haulers won him a commission from Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich for a large painting on the subject — “Barge Haulers on the Volga”, completed in 1873.

  3. 23 February 1872

    Venchaniye s Veroy Shevtsovoy

  4. 1873

“Barge Haulers on the Volga” at the Vienna World Exhibition

Shown at the Vienna International Exposition, “Barge Haulers on the Volga” brought Repin his first international attention, and the Academy’s grant allowed him a long journey — through Austria and Italy to Paris.

  5. April 1873 – 1876

    Pensionerskaya poyezdka: Vena, Italy, Paris

  6. 1876

    Zvaniye akademika za «Sadko»
