Meanwhile, in the life of László Moholy-Nagy

The whole life
  1. October 1918

    Gives up law for painting

Discharged from the army in October 1918, László abandoned his law studies and attended the private art school of the Hungarian Fauve Róbert Berény. Other accounts, by contrast, say he completed a law degree.

  2. 1919

The Soviet Republic falls; flight to Vienna

László supported the Hungarian Soviet Republic, declared early in 1919, though he held no office in it. After its defeat in August he withdrew to Szeged, where an exhibition of his work was held, and around November 1919 he left for Vienna. Other accounts date his flight to Szeged to late 1919.

    Berlin

  5. 1922

Show at Der Sturm; meeting Gropius

At a joint exhibition with his fellow Hungarian Peter Laszlo Peri at Der Sturm, László met Walter Gropius. Herwarth Walden showed his works alongside Peri's in 1922–1924.

  6. summer 1922

Summer on the Rhône: first photograms

On holiday with Lucia on the Rhône, László learned from her to make photograms on light-sensitive paper — photography became one of his main pursuits, with his wife at first his technical guide. That summer he also began sketching ideas for what would become the Light-Space Modulator.
