Эскиз одноименной картины (1936−1937)

В небольшом графическом произведении художник представил картину страшной бомбардировки. В центре композиции поднимаются клубы черного дыма. Их округлые очертания на фоне ярко освещенных взрывами и прожекторами разноцветных зданий напоминают какое-то пышное растение. Справа и слева вырастают такие же дымовые пирамиды. Над городской площадью, как хищные птицы с широко распростертыми крыльями, парят самолеты. Уже в эскизе Клюн изобразил сцену паники на площади.

В акварели напряжение усилено и резкими цветовыми контрастами темного неба и освещенных зданий, и острыми лучами прожекторов, рассекающих плоскость листа. Ощущение беззащитности жителей, их беспомощности перед налетом грозной военной техники подчеркнуто разницей масштабов фигурок людей и самолетов.

Живописная картина точно воспроизводит первоначальную композицию, намеченную автором в технике акварели. В ней более детально написан пейзаж с поднимающимися на холм зданиями, добавлено количество налетевших на город самолетов. Но при сравнении эскиза с законченной картиной становится ясно, что живопись, обретая колористическую цельность, большее образное единство, вместе с цветовыми контрастами и подчеркнутой динамикой теряет остроту выразительности.
