Meanwhile, in the life of Louis Sullivan

The whole life
  1. 1875–1879

A draughtsman for Johnston & Edelman

Back in Chicago from Paris, Sullivan worked as a draughtsman for the firm of Joseph S. Johnston & John Edelman; he was assigned the design of fresco-secco stencils (a technique applied to dry plaster) for the interior of Moody Tabernacle.

  2. 1879

    Hired by Dankmar Adler’s firm

In 1879 Sullivan was hired by the firm of the engineer Dankmar Adler; his time at Adler & Sullivan marked the beginning of his most productive years.

  3. 1880–1881

    Becomes Adler’s partner

A year or two after joining, Sullivan became Adler’s partner; the firm of Adler & Sullivan lasted until 1894–1895. They complemented each other perfectly: Sullivan designed the interior decoration, while Adler drew up the plans and handled the engineering.

  4. 1880s

    Fame as theatre architects

Adler & Sullivan first won fame as theatre architects: most of their theatres were in Chicago, but their reputation brought commissions as far west as Pueblo, Colorado, and Seattle (unbuilt).
