Лесные обитатели, живущие у самых корней и покрывающие землю разноцветным ковром, привлекали внимание Шишкина не меньше сосен-гигантов и громадных дубов. Здесь художник использовал иную живописную оптику. Далекие перспективы сменяются в небольших этюдах максимальной близостью к «героям», эпическое обобщение уступает камерному лирическому настроению. Пышные травы и скромные лесные цветы, грибы, бархатные мхи и шершавые лишайники – самая малая малость бескрайнего леса достойна внимания художника, который не устает ими любоваться.

Подобные натурные штудии, конечно, служили Шишкину подготовительным материалом при написании больших полотен, и этюд «Мухоморы» – явно не исключение. Такую же яркую семейку невозможно не заметить, к примеру, на более ранней картине художника «Рубка леса» (1867, Третьяковская галерея). Тем не менее самостоятельную ценность крошечных этюдов осознавали и сам автор, и поклонники его таланта. Не случайно поздние прижизненные выставки Шишкина состояли преимущественно из небольших работ, а коллекционеры охотно приобретали лесные «натюрморты», полные природной естественности и живописного обаяния.

    He took part in the world's fairs in Vienna (1873) and Paris (1878).

    The Album "25 Engravings on Copper"

    He published a second album, "25 Engravings on Copper by I. I. Shishkin," prepared for print with the help of his friend, the landscape painter I. V. Volkovsky.

  3. May – October 1879

    His Only Trip to the Crimea

    Accompanied by the landscape painter Efim Volkov and his pupil Andrei Shilder, he toured the entire southern coast of the Crimea (Gurzuf, Alupka, Alushta, with an ascent of Ai-Petri); he brought back studies, drawings, and pastels, on the basis of which he painted pictures for the 8th Peredvizhniki exhibition of 1880.

    Death of His Second Wife, Olga Lagoda

    He lost his second wife, the painter Olga Lagoda-Shishkina; he went through an emotionally difficult period and for some time could not work, until the urge to create brought him back to life.

  5. 21 June 1881

    Birth of His Daughter Ksenia

    Shishkin and his second wife, the landscape painter Olga Lagoda, had a daughter, Ksenia; after her mother's death she was raised by Olga's sister Victoria Lagoda.
