Anverso: Tres apuntes masculinos A la izquierda, figura masculina de pie, de perfil a la derecha, al que la cabeza no se le ha terminado de dibujar. Está ligeramente inclinado hacia delante y tiene algo entre las manos, parece algún elemento de tela. A la altura de sus rodillas, apunte de una figura masculina, sólo la cabeza y uno de sus brazos, vistos desde arriba. Por último, una tercera figura masculina de perfil a la izquierda con la mitad superior del cuerpo completamente inclinada hacia abajo y los brazos extendidos frente a él. Las piernas se han dibujado solo hasta las rodillas. Reverso: Mujer en la barca Figura femenina de espaldas, de pie en una barca de remos. Lleva pañuelo que le cae en forma de pico a la espalda y sostiene con ambas manos un remo que cae en la zona izquierda de la embarcación. Frene a ella, en último plano, asoma otra figura que parece manejar el otro remo que cae en el lado contrario.

    Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

    Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

    “A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid

    Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
