About the work
A drawing of a horse identified by the artist's shorthand as 'Mr Beale's'. Thomas Beale (c.1775-1841), a long-standing resident of Macau, was a dealer in opium and other commodities, who in 1816 was declared bankrupt, owing a huge sum to the East India Company. He lived on in Macau, collecting birds, fishes and plants in his botanic garden, until his death – under mysterious circumstances - at Cacilhas Bay.
