This red wax model of the mourning Virgin was formerly ascribed to Giambologna.
The pose of the figure corresponds closely with that of the Virgin in a Crucifixion group in the Palazzo Pitti ascribed to Giovanni Bologna. However, the model is not by him, and is probably a study by one of his followers for a figure in a similar group.
Formerly in the Gherardini Collection of artists’ terracotta and wax models. Was acquired in 1854
