About the sculpture
As Wedgwood’s first Artist in Residence from 1976 to 1978, the pioneering sculptural ceramicist Glenys Barton (b.1944) worked with the Wedgwood factory to produce a series of 26 sculptures. Using bone china and black basalt, Barton’s sculptures combined the precision of factory techniques, from transfer-printing to casting, with refined, modern forms. Her designs explore the human form through the recurring motifs of figures, silhouettes, heads and hands.
