    Studies under B. V. Ioganson at the Repin Institute

    He studied at the Leningrad Secondary Art School and then at the Repin Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, in the studio of B. V. Ioganson. By state assignment he was sent to Izhevsk as a teacher of drawing and trigonometry, then transferred to Ivanovo and afterwards to Moscow.

    Marries Nina Vinogradova-Benois

    His first wife was Nina Vinogradova-Benois (1936–1986); the marriage lasted until 1986. While married, he had a relationship with the VGIK student Larisa Kadochnikova.
