Anverso: Mercado de grano En el centro de la hoja, figura femenina de pie y de cuerpo entero, de perfil a la derecha. Lleva pañuelo a la cabeza y amplia falda, y parece portar algún tipo de bulto entre las manos. A su espalda, dos niñas, también de perfil a la derecha, avanzando tras ella. Las niñas van vestidas igual que la figura adulta, y se ha indicado el color de sus faldas. Reverso: Niña leonesa En el ángulo inferior izquierdo, figura infantil de una niña de espaldas a nosotros girando ligeramente la cabeza a la derecha. Lleva pañuelo a la cabeza y parece que a la espalda le cuelga otro en forma de pico, o quizá sea un dengue. Tiene el brazo izquierdo apoyado en la cadera.

The whole life1900
Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
