About the work
Cozens generally bathes the rising ground in the foreground in sunlight. Here the hill on which the hawthorns grow is shaded, while the sun catches the crown of the trees. Perhaps the sun is just rising. Bright sunlight also shines on the landscape further
back. This contrast of dark and light heightens the sense of receding distance.
