Engravings after his paintings in gift annuals
Four of his paintings, among them “Moonlight” and “The Mother and Child” (the latter he counted among his best works), are engraved and published in the annual gift books The Atlantic Souvenir and The Token.

Publishes the romance “Monaldi”
Publishes “Monaldi”, a romance illustrating Italian life.
1842
Griswold dedicates “The Poets and Poetry of America” to him
The influential critic and editor Rufus Wilmot Griswold dedicates his famous anthology “The Poets and Poetry of America” to him.
9 July 1843
Death at the age of 63
Dies at 63 without finishing “Belshazzar’s Feast”, the painting he had worked on for years as his intended masterpiece. He is buried in the Old Burying Ground in Harvard Square, between the First Parish Church and Christ Church.
