About the work

Shadow portraits or silhouettes became popular in the 18th century as a way of capturing a faithful likeness. Some were direct tracings of a shadow, while others used mechanical devices to reduce scale. Edouart, a portrait artist who specialised in silhouettes, cut each portrait in duplicate, adding the name, date and location of the sitter on the back, much as a photographer keeps reference negatives.
