Его полные динамики «праздники» с их радостными и звучными красками, улыбающимися румяными лицами, разнонаправленным движением воспринимаются как апофеоз народной жизни, как отражение извечной мечты народа о красоте, счастье и полноте бытия, ярко отразившейся в фольклоре и ремеслах. Картины мастера пронизывает идея подлинного «хорового» начала, о котором мечтал и тосковал теоретик символизма Вяч. Иванов. Самые многолюдные его «праздники» гармоничны и представляют собой единое целое не только потому, что отлично «срежессированы» автором, но и потому, что уже в основе их замысла лежала гармония, мысль о том, что все люди братья и члены одной огромной семьи.

Потому художник выбирает панорамные композиции с глубоким и сложным развитием пространства (варианты «Масленицы», 1916, Ж-4358 , Ж-11161 ), совершенные, близкие квадрату форматы полотен (« Балаганы », 1917; «Троицын день», 1920), изображает теплые зимние солнечные дни с инеем и обильным пушистым снегом или нежаркие ясные дни в разгар лета.   1. summer 1917

    A summer at the Konkala sanatorium in Vyborg

    After his second operation Kustodiev spent the summer at the Konkala sanatorium in Vyborg, painting there portraits of Countess S. A. Grabowska against a pine park, of Lopatina and of Anita Budengof, the picture “On the Bridge” and the landscapes “Konkola (Finland)” and “Forest Lake at Konkola”.

  2. 1918

    Decorates Petrograd for the first anniversary of October

    After the Revolution Kustodiev helped decorate Petrograd for the first anniversary of the October Revolution, and drew posters, popular prints and pictures on revolutionary themes.

  3. 1918–1921

    Opera designs: “The Snow Maiden”, “The Tsar's Bride”

    His opera designs were a success: “The Snow Maiden” for the Bolshoi Theatre (1918, never staged), “The Tsar's Bride” at the Bolshoi Opera Theatre of the People's House (1920), and set and costume designs for Serov's “The Power of the Fiend” at the former Mariinsky Theatre (1921).
