Probable Journey to Northern Italy
That winter Holbein probably visited Northern Italy; no documents of the journey survive, but he is believed to have studied the Italian fresco masters, including Mantegna.

Work in Lucerne: Murals for the Hertenstein House
Together with his father he painted the interior and exterior walls of the house of the merchant Jakob von Hertenstein in Lucerne, where he remained in 1517-1519; he also produced cartoons for stained glass.

Marriage to Elsbeth Binsenstock-Schmid
He married Elsbeth Binsenstock-Schmid, the widow of a Basel tanner, who was older than he; the marriage produced four children.

Return to Basel
In the autumn of 1519 he returned from Lucerne to Basel, where he quickly reestablished himself and opened a busy workshop; around this time his brother Ambrosius died.

Guild Membership and Basel Citizenship
His marriage enabled the artist to join Basel's painters' guild, the Zum Himmel ("To Heaven") guild, and to become a citizen of the city.
