About the painting

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh was born ca.1693 and ruled at Amer (Amber) in Rajasthan from 1700 to 1744. He founded the city of Jaipur in 1728, which was to become his new capital. The young ruler is shown here seated on a prancing horse. Bearers of a morchhal (peacock-feather fan) and a standard walk behind him, and three attendants carrying a spear and weapons wrapped in cloth accompany him.
