На протяжении жизни излюбленными сюжетами для Шишкина являлись изображения величественного леса с его заросшими чащами, мшистой почвой и густой растительностью, с могучей листвой развесистых дубов и колючими лапами веток елей и сосен. В конце 1880–1890-х годов, в последний период творчества мастера, полотнам Шишкина была свойственна все большая лиричность, тяга, по выражению самого художника, к «теплой, живой беседе души с природой и богом». Внимание живописца привлекали старые парки, тихие пруды с застывшими водами, заброшенные мельницы на лесных речках, словом, те мотивы, от которых будто бы исходило ощущение покоя, тишины и элегической задумчивости.

Полотно «Летний день» было написано в одном из парков Петергофа, где Шишкин проводил теплые месяцы 1891 года. Затененный дубовыми «атлантами» ручей предстает настоящим оазисом на фоне выжженной солнечным пеклом поляны вдалеке, где в мареве зноя виднеются бескрайние рощи, крыши дачных построек, покосившаяся изгородь. Бредущая странница с котомкой за спиной «оживляет» безлюдный пейзаж. В творческой лаборатории Шишкина в эти годы намечается обращение к передаче осязаемости свето-воздушной среды, «дышащей» природы. Характерно, что, как и представители младшего поколения художников-передвижников, Шишкин признает самостоятельное значение этюдной живописи. В ноябре 1891 года он открывает показательную отчетную персональную выставку этюдов, рисунков, гравюр, созданных за период с 1849 по 1891 год.

Разнообразие воспроизведенных им сюжетов поражало публику: даже в сходных мотивах – изображении лесных полян, сосновых боров, освещенных солнцем, мшистых стволов, павших жертвами вырубки, – не было повторений. В разработке живописной ткани картины «Летний день» проступает внимание к сохранению ощущения легкости, «воздушности» в трактовке деталей пейзажа.

    A monographic exhibition of Shishkin's work was held, at which the painting "A River Backwater in the Forest" may have been shown under the title "Meri-Hovi, the Estate of Mr. Riedinger."

    Head of the Academy's Landscape Studio

    He was invited to head the teaching landscape studio of the Academy of Arts after the new charter came into force, but for various reasons held the post only briefly.

    Full Member of the Academy of Arts

    He became a full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (under the new charter).
