Lithographie en couleurs sur papier ; Notice du catalogue "Picasso, Chagall, Signac..." : La communauté d’engagement politique de Fernand Léger et de Paul Eluard les rapproche lors du retour des États-Unis de Fernand Léger. Dès 1947, Léger effectue un portrait d’Eluard, tandis que ce dernier lui dédie un poème "A Fernand Léger" paru dans les Cahiers du Sud. En août 1948 est organisé à Wroclaw, en Pologne, un congrès des intellectuels pour la paix, congrès fondateur du Mouvement de la paix. Paul Eluard et Fernand Léger s'y rendirent accompagnés d'autres intellectuels formant la délégation française, dont Pablo Picasso. Eluard, directeur d’une collection aux Éditions Les Trois Collines à Genève, confie à Léger l’illustration de l’ouvrage "Coordonnées" de Guillevic. Léger réalise vingt dessins pour ce livre.

En 1951, à l’occasion de l’exposition "Les Constructeurs", Eluard écrit un poème éponyme. Cette amitié pourrait être à l’origine des dons de Fernand Léger au musée. En effet le 23 janvier 1951 Paul Eluard fait don au musée d’éditions originales, de photographies, de manuscrits et d’un buste de Fenosa. Après sa mort en 1952, ce sera sa femme Dominique Eluard qui consentira plusieurs généreux dons. L. G.

  1. 1952

    The 26th Venice Biennale

    In 1952 Léger takes part in the 26th Venice Biennale. In April he has an exhibition and gives a lecture at the Kunsthalle in Bern, and there are exhibitions at Paris galleries and at Sidney Janis's gallery in New York.

  2. 21 February 1952

    Marriage to Nadia Khodossevitch and a home in Gif-sur-Yvette

    On 21 February 1952 Léger marries Nadia Khodossevitch, a cousin of the poet, who had been a student of his Academy since 1924 and later its assistant. They settle in the Gros-Tilleul quarter of Gif-sur-Yvette.

  3. 1953

    A touring exhibition in Japan

    In 1953 an exhibition of Léger's work tours Japan; his work is also shown at the Gallery of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and in San Francisco, and an exhibition of coloured sculptures is held at the Louis Carré gallery.

  4. 1955

    The Grand Prix in São Paulo and a retrospective in Lyon

    In 1955 Léger receives the Grand Prix at the São Paulo Art Biennial, and a retrospective exhibition of his work is held at the Lyon museum.
