    He exhibits at the Salon for the first time.

  2. 1859–1861

    Académie Suisse and the influence of Courbet

    From 1859 he attends the Académie Suisse, where he studies until 1861; one of his early influences is the Realism of Gustave Courbet.

  3. 1862–1866

    From Courbet to Velázquez

    During these years he moves away from Courbet’s style and becomes more interested in Diego Velázquez.

  4. 1862–1866

    To Rome and Spain on a scholarship

    From 1862 to 1866 he travels to Rome and Spain thanks to a scholarship granted by his hometown.
