About the work
Referencing Paul Cezanne's landscapes in its patches of unmodulated colour and parallel brushstrokes, this watercolour verges on the abstract. The bright colour palette is typical of Bell's work. The subject is likely the pond at Charleston Famhouse in Sussex, where Bell lived on and off from 1916 to 1961.
