About the sculpture

This seated lady, which represents Lady Rosalind Frances Howard, 9th Countess of Carlisle, is cast in 1908, from the original terracotta model by Jules Dalou exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872.

Enrico Cantoni (active 1882-1912) was commissioned by the Museum to produce this bronze, which was a cast from the original plaster by Dalou then in his Chelsea studio. A 'Moulder for Sculptors. Also bronzing and coloring' was the description of Cantoni's letter head, his adress been given as 100 Church Street, Fulham Road.

The sitter Lady Carlisle (1845-1921) was a promoter of women's political rights and temperance reform.
