About the work

In the museum's own words — in Spanish

Anverso: La jota En primer plano, a la izquierda, figura masculina de perfil a la izquierda, bailando con el brazo derecho levantado. La figura se escapa del perímetro del papel, sin representarse pies ni cabeza. Lleva chaquetilla corta, fajín a la cintura y calzón ajustado por debajo de la rodilla. Tras él, varias figuras masculinas sentadas tocando la guitarra. La figura que queda más al centro, de frente a nosotros, lleva sombrero de ala ancha y copa picuda. Frente a él, una silla que queda en primer plano, vacía. Junto a ella, a la derecha, figuras de pie. Reverso: Valencianos En primer plano, a la izquierda, figura masculina sentada de perfil a la derecha, girando la cabeza hacia nosotros de forma que la vemos de frente. Parece que este hombre va vestido con zarigüelles (calzones amplios y abolsados típicos del traje masculino de labor valenciano), dibujados en blanco con el clarión. El resto del dibujo resulta muy confuso, componiéndose de muchos trazos entrecruzados, de forma que sólo distinguimos parte de una silla hacia el centro de la hoja.

    Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

    Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.
