In the life of Zinaida Serebryakova

The whole life
  1. 1902–1903

Travels in Italy: Titian and Tintoretto

She spent 1902–1903 in Italy. According to her first biographer, Sergei Ernst, on this journey she clearly preferred the fullness of feeling of Titian and Tintoretto to the fragile poetry of the primitives.

  2. 1910

Self-portrait at the Mir iskusstva exhibition

Her brother Yevgeny encouraged her to enter the self-portrait in an exhibition mounted by Mir iskusstva; it was received with enthusiasm and purchased for the Tretyakov Gallery, which marked the beginning of her success in Russia.

  3. December 1917

Departure from Neskuchnoye: Zmiyiv, then Kharkiv

With the looting of landowners’ families under way, the Serebriakov family moved to Zmiyiv and, in early 1918, to Kharkiv.

  4. 21 March 1919

    Her husband dies of typhus

In Kharkiv, in a rented flat on Kontorskaya Street, her husband Boris died of typhus; she was left with four children and a sick mother and no means of support. Other accounts say he had been arrested beforehand.

  5. November 1919

    Neskuchnoye is plundered and burned

The Serebriakovs’ family estate was plundered and burned (other accounts say as early as 1918); its stores were lost and the family went hungry.

  6. August 1924

Leaves for Paris on a commission and never returns

In August 1924 (other accounts say autumn) she went to Paris on a commission for a large decorative mural; she hoped to hold an exhibition, earn money and return, but remained in emigration for good, cut off from her homeland and her children.
