Значительную часть наследия Шишкина, всю жизнь неутомимо работавшего на пленэре, составляют натурные этюды. Среди них множество видов лесных полян и опушек, болотных зарослей, речных заводей. Укромные природные уголки кажутся надежно укрытыми от посторонних глаз, но не от пристального взгляда живописца, умевшего разглядеть и запечатлеть каждую деталь лесного мира.

Пространственное решение пейзажа «К осени» нарочито фрагментарно. Тем не менее его камерность и непринужденность выдают безошибочный композиционный расчет. Этюдна, скорее, манера письма – широкие, даже грубоватые мазки соседствуют с тщательными, мелкими живописными «стежками», которыми прописаны травинки, листочки, веточки, коряги, выступающие из водной глади. Маэстрия художника достигает в подобных работах своей вершины, побуждая наслаждаться не только реальностью атмосферы тихого дня, но самой живописной фактурой полотна.

    He published a second album, "25 Engravings on Copper by I. I. Shishkin," prepared for print with the help of his friend, the landscape painter I. V. Volkovsky.

  3. May – October 1879

    His Only Trip to the Crimea

    Accompanied by the landscape painter Efim Volkov and his pupil Andrei Shilder, he toured the entire southern coast of the Crimea (Gurzuf, Alupka, Alushta, with an ascent of Ai-Petri); he brought back studies, drawings, and pastels, on the basis of which he painted pictures for the 8th Peredvizhniki exhibition of 1880.

    Death of His Second Wife, Olga Lagoda

    He lost his second wife, the painter Olga Lagoda-Shishkina; he went through an emotionally difficult period and for some time could not work, until the urge to create brought him back to life.

  5. 21 June 1881

    Birth of His Daughter Ksenia

    Shishkin and his second wife, the landscape painter Olga Lagoda, had a daughter, Ksenia; after her mother's death she was raised by Olga's sister Victoria Lagoda.
