The whole life
  1. 1909–1920

    Move to Paris

    After studying in Madrid, Rivera settled in Paris, where he lived and worked from 1909 to 1920; he was closely acquainted with the Parisian artistic elite, including Pablo Picasso and Alfonso Reyes.

  2. 1916–1918

    The birth and death of his son Diego

    Rivera and Angelina Beloff had a son, Diego (1916–1918), the artist's first child and only son, who died at the age of two.

  3. 1921

    Return to Mexico for the state mural programme

    After José Vasconcelos became Minister of Education, Rivera returned home to join the government-sponsored mural programme he had planned; it also involved José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo and the Frenchman Jean Charlot.

  4. 1922

    Joins the Mexican Communist Party

    Later in 1922 Rivera joined the Mexican Communist Party, including its Central Committee.

  5. June 1922

    Married: Guadalupe Marín

  6. 1922–1929

    Meeting Frida Kahlo

    While still married to Guadalupe Marín, Rivera met the art student Frida Kahlo in Mexico City; a passionate affair began between them, and after his divorce from Marín they married.
