Portrait of Irene Worth by Cecil Beaton, mid 20th century.
Actress Irene Worth (1916-2002) was born in America, but much of her career was spent on the British stage. She acted in classics and modern plays in the West End and appeared with the Old Vic Company, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, notably as Goneril in Peter Brook's production of King Lear (1962) and Volumnia in Peter Hall's National Theatre Coriolanus (1985). She frequently worked with John Gielgud, who became a great friend.
